The constitution of Kenya 2010, under the fourth schedule on trade tourism and cooperative development the county is responsible for the following functions;
Trade development and regulation:
(a) Fair trading practices including—
(i) Verification of weighing and measuring instruments;
(ii) Inspection of weighing and measuring instruments and pre-packed goods;
(iii) Investigation of complaints relating to unfair trade practices; and
(iv) Prosecution of offenses arising from unfair trade practices.
(b) Co-operative societies—;
(i) Promotion of co-operative societies;
(ii) Processing of application for registration;
(iii) Inspections and investigations;
(iv) Training needs assessment for co-operative movement;
(v) Market information dissemination & advisory services;
(vi) Banking inspections local Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies;
(vii) Risk assessment in Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies;
(viii) Investment advisory services;
(ix) Co-ordination and monitoring of co-operative indemnity by co-operative leaders;
(x) Promotion of co-operative ventures and innovations for local co-operatives;
(xi) Carrying out certification audits;
(xii) Carrying out continuous and compliance audits;
(xiii) Co-operative advisory services;
(xiv) Pre-cooperative education;
(xv) Settlement of disputes (arbitration);and
(xvi) Registration of co-operative societies audited accounts.
The county also has a great potential for tourism. It’s a home to one of the world 25 most endangered primate the crested tana mangabey monkey and the elusive and exclusively arboreal and diurnal red Colobus monkey and it is also a strong hold for over 260 species of birds and 57 species of mammals i.e. zebras gazelles hippos lion giraffes and crocodiles at the Tana primate reserve locally known as Mchelelo game reserve.
The county has a vibrant cooperative movement ranging from Agric-marketing, livestock, ranching and Saccos. Currently we have embarked in sensitization meetings to create cooperative awareness in the county resulting in formation of four marketing cooperatives for mangoes, beekeeping, meat-goat and dairy i.e. camel milk .
